Where People, Culture and Performance Meet

Most organizations know what they want their culture to be. The harder question is whether people experience it that way.

Strategy can be sound while execution stalls. Leaders can care deeply while their actions send mixed messages. Teams can have the talent to perform and still be slowed by unclear expectations, weak accountability, fractured trust, poor communication, or decisions that never quite get made.

And organizations can invest heavily in training, programs, and new initiatives only to watch the same problems return.

That is where The People Company comes in.

We work with leaders to understand what is really shaping the way people lead, work together, make decisions, and perform. Then we turn what we find into practical changes in leadership, culture, teams, and organizational practices.

Because when people and performance are struggling, another program may not be the answer. Sometimes you have to look more closely at the organization itself.

Our Story

The People Company was born from questions about who gets the opportunity to thrive—and what organizations do, intentionally or unintentionally, to shape that opportunity.

In 2016, events across the country were forcing difficult conversations about race, gender, opportunity, power, and belonging. The deaths of Trayvon Martin and Tony Robinson, the emergence of Black Lives Matter, and the growing movement that would become #MeToo made inequities harder for institutions to ignore.

Our founder, Deborah Biddle, was seeing another side of the issue through her work in career transition. Talented women, particularly mid-career women of color, were trying to advance without the development, sponsorship, and access routinely available to others.

She wanted to change that.

Then an unexpected opportunity widened the lens.

A friend encouraged Deborah to submit a proposal to speak at Madison Nonprofit Day. She did, presenting on effective fundraising in communities of color. Soon after, a healthcare organization invited her to speak about unconscious bias.

That invitation changed the direction of the company.

Over the years that followed, organizations brought Deborah in for increasingly complex work—first around diversity, equity and inclusion, and then around leadership, organizational culture, assessment, team effectiveness, executive coaching, learning, and strategic advising.

And across industries, organizations, and issues, a pattern became impossible to miss:

What leaders intend is not always what employees experience. And what employees experience ultimately shapes how well an organization performs.

That insight changed our work.

Today, The People Company Consulting Group works with organizations across the United States and internationally to strengthen the conditions that allow people and performance to thrive together.

Our work has expanded. Our purpose has become clearer.

Build stronger leaders. Create healthier cultures. Strengthen how people work together. Make organizations work better.

What We Believe

Culture is what people experience.

Not the values on the wall. Not the employee campaign. Not what was announced at the leadership retreat.

Culture shows up in what happens every day.

Who gets heard. How decisions get made. Whether expectations are clear. What gets rewarded. What gets tolerated. How people handle disagreement. Whether accountability applies consistently. What leaders do when the pressure is on.

Those moments tell people what an organization really values.

And they affect whether people trust leadership, speak up, collaborate, take ownership, stay, grow, and do their best work.

That is why we don’t begin by asking, “What program do you need?”

We ask:

What is happening here—and what is making it harder for your people and your organization to perform at their best?

Then we get to work.

We examine the leadership behaviors, workplace practices, team dynamics, and organizational systems producing today’s experience. We identify what needs to be protected, what needs to change, and where leaders have the greatest opportunity to make a difference.

The goal isn’t a perfect workplace.

It’s an organization that can do what it says matters.

THINK Better. DO Better. BE Better.

Better organizations don’t happen because people want them badly enough.

They happen when leaders are willing to see clearly, question what is no longer working, make different decisions, and follow through long enough for people to experience the difference.

That’s the work.

And it starts with being willing to look.

What might your organization see if you looked closer?

If the same leadership, culture, or team challenges keep resurfacing, don’t assume you need another initiative. Let’s find out what’s driving them.

The culture you intend matters.
The culture people experience is the one that shapes your results.
